Visiting Instructor Marcus Lee-Steere of Chikushinkai presents an Iaido (weaponary) Class.

It was a thrill to have instructors Marcus-Lee and John visit and train our Senior Class in the Martial Art of Iaido recently. Their class began with a brief history of Iaido and Sempai Marcus’ background in Jodo and Iaido. Soon after the students were treated to a demonstration of both instructors performing synchronised Katas and movements, which demonstrated grace and control using their swords.

The class was then sent in small groups to listen to, follow and join in using Bokuto or Bokken - wooden swords and Iaitos - metal practise swords designed to be similar in weight and balance to the feel of a real blade. Feeling a little anxious, many students found the simple task of placing the sword facing the correct way up on their side a difficult task! However, through simple, direct instructions given by both Marcus and John, many students began to feel comfortable and began to take more control.

The swords were deceptively heavy and quite difficult to manoeuvre and keeping correct angles and heights was not an easy task. Both instructors persisted with altering and adjusting and all students responded positively and thoroughly enjoyed their time experiencing the new art.

Once again, Power of Won would like to thank both instructors for their time and efforts and we look forward to keeping in touch in the future.
