About Power of Won - Shotokan Karate

In the Martial Art Shotokan system of karate there are 26 kata.   Most new students focus on the 5 Heain katas and when reaching higher ranks, learn and develop the higher ranked kata.  Kata develops, strength, co-ordination, balance, focus, knowledge of what to do and how to do it and an overall awareness of one's self.mawashi geri - round house kick

At Power Of Won various forms of Kumite are practiced.  From basic one step fighting through to the complex multiple attacks.  Students do their best in non contact kumite and are usually ranked with similar rank to themselves, however they are sometimes challenged to spar against higher ranks who will often teach and assist the lower ranks in improving their technique and application of their moves.Martial arts for kids graphic

There are 5 areas to learn: Dachi (Stances), Uke (Blocks), Keri (Kicks), Zuki (Punches) and Uchi (Strikes).  At Power Of Won we learn the Japanese and English version of each of these and by the time a student reaches black belt level they are to know over 100 different techniques.

Incorporated in most classes are a variety of fun and games.  These are not only to provide fun but to keep student interested.  With most games, appreciation toward their relationship and benefits towards the martial art are reflected upon after the activity.

Sensei Michael thoroughly enjoys his teaching and training with his students and others.  Having been a school teacher for over 18 years, has allowed Sensei Michael to create a training class that flows and one that allows all students of differing skills to develop at their own rate. Sensei Michael has been teaching the art for over 19 years.  In this time he has trained with many different instructors, always appreciating their teachings and taking away knowledge and passing this on to his students.
