2011 Senior Karate Camp Aireys Inlet
On Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th June, twenty-nine
students ventured off to Aireys Inlet at Camp Angahook. It was a task that
Jordan Negrin, John Hatty, Daniel Chrystie and Mark Bates, plan, organise a
variety of activities and run the camp weekend as a requirement to attain
their Black Belt.
The camp site was well equipped and the candidates planned
accordingly, having visited the camp a couple of weeks earlier. On Saturday the
students participated in karate, basketball, volleyball, hut building,
orienteering, and a Ninja Night Hunt. Then the candidates treated the students
to an informative and spiritual presentation around a fire place. During this,
the students received a wonderful gift, a necklace with the word, “Sacrifice” in
Japanese
calligraphy with a Karate person kicking. A gift the students all appreciate and
will treasure for life.
Soon after, the candidates were informed of a change of plans to the
weekend and that they were to sit their Black Belt grading day on the Sunday,
the second day of camp. The grading day was supposed to be on the 25th
June, however, as up-coming Black Belts, they needed to expect the unexpected!
The four candidates were sent off to begin and complete some tasks and to
prepare for the following day.
The other students continued their camp on the Sunday, led by the
higher ranks when necessary. The first activity after breakfast, the students
were treated to a wonderful session of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Con Lazos
from, of Fusion Martial Arts. He was ably assisted by his students, James
and Aaron, who all demonstrated a variety of Jiu Jitsu with poise and precision,
which our students were totally engaged in and thoroughly enjoyed.

The students went on to later visit a local beach and explore the
area. They relaxed and did some kata on the beach. Upon return they participated
in the low ropes course, wrote a letter about their weekend and socialised and
built on existing relationships.
During this time, the four candidates worked through a variety of
physical, spiritual and mental requirements set down as a part of a Black Belt
grading day. At the day’s end, the candidates succeeded in passing
and it was a wonderful sharing of emotions and congratulations all round.
I would like to thank Michelle for her wonderful catering and food.
Well done to all the students for getting along so well, assisting when
necessary and for your positive attitude to all activities.
Finally, I would like to congratulate Jordan, Daniel, John and Mark,
for planning the weekend, organising all activities and for the wonderful
achievement of earning your Black Belt
